Millthorpe Public School kindergarten students received an exciting surprise recently ......a letter from the Prime Minister! The enthusiastic students had sent the Prime Minister multiple letters about the problems that whaling is causing to the whale population. The letters were urging those involved in whaling to stop immediately.

The Prime Minister's letter was inspiring, with him stating:

"I encourage all of the students to embrace reading because it will open up the world to you".

This was just one of the many positive comments that Mr Abbott had to say to our kindergarten students.

Mrs Roffe, the KRH teacher, was filled with praise for her students. When asked about how the kindergarten students came to write to the Prime Minister she replied:

"We were learning about whales and the students wanted to send letters about the problems of whaling. When we received a reply from the Prime Minister's office we were all very excited. In the letter it was thanking the kindergarten students for their letters and stating that one of the kinders could be the next Prime Minister!"

Our Principal, Ms Jackett, was very excited about the Prime Minister's letter, exclaiming:

"I thought kindergarten were VERY clever and thoughtful when they wrote about whaling issues to the Prime Minister. They were really caring and confidently wrote to the Prime Minister about their concerns. I am really proud of them.

I was AMAZED that the Prime Minister wrote back! However, he didn't really tell the students what HE would do about the whaling issues concerning them - but he is proud that they are such great readers and writers. I think that it's a really hard issue for the Prime Minister to address because of political pressures involved".

Congratulations to the kindergarten students for their concern about an important issue and for taking action.
