Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

A Memorable Millthorpe March for Anzac Day

By Finn T

This year is the Centenary of Anzac Day and the Anzac Day march at Millthorpe was certainly one to remember. Huge crowds came to march on what turned out to be a beautiful morning. Ms Jackett was very proud of the turnout this year and we asked her a few questions about the march.

1. Was there a big crowd this year compared to previous years?

Oh, yes! Because it was the Centenary of the Gallipoli landing 100 years ago and lots of people came. Also, because it was during Term time, it meant that families weren't away on holidays.

2. Why do you think that it's important for students to attend Anzac Day services?

Well, it shows that the children remember and care about Anzac Day and those who fought in wars.

3. Were there any changes to the usual service becasue of the Centenary of Anzac?

They mentioned the local men and women who went to Gallipolli and died. Year 6 students at Millthorpe did projects on 38 local people who died in the First World War. The local museum also lent us the other school honour boards for our school exhibition. The museum is putting the year 6 posters on permanent display, so people can enjoy them for years to come!

On week three of Term 3 2015 Millthorpe Public School held our annual book parade and book fair. The theme of this year's book week was 'Books Light Up Our World'. There were lots of fantastic costumes to be seen on the day. The different characters included
Harry Potter, lots of
Terrys and Andys from the Story Treehouse,
Tashi, the
Cat in the Hat, the
Secret Garden, and
Rainbow Magic characters. All the staff were dressed up as well, with the teachers all dressed up as characters from
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the support staff came as
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Some other characters included
Zac Powers,
Pearlie, and
Jack and Ann.

I interviewed Miss Jordan, our school librarian, to find out what she thought of this year's book parade. Here's what she had to say:

What was your favourite costume?

Me, of course, as Willy Wonka!

Were the costumes different to last year?

Yes! They were way more inventive.

Was there a character that you haven't seen before that you saw this year?

Yes! There were plenty more non-fiction book characters.

If you could dress up as any character who would it be?

Arthur Dent from The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy because he wears pyjamas and a dressing gown!

Which teacher do you think had the best costume?

Me! Willy Wonka because of the top hat - I love top hats!

What a great book parade and book fair we had this year. Everybody had a fantastic day and I can't wait until next year. I have already started planning my costume!

Meet Our New Teachers

	By Kaity and Abbey.

Millthorpe Public School has some wonderful new teachers. We wanted to find out a little bit about them, so we asked them some questions. The new teachers are Mrs Stanford, who came from Errowanbang Public School after it closed and Mrs Thompson who is our fantastic new music teacher.

Mrs Thompson has been teaching some exciting music lessons to the whiole school. She answered these questions:

What do you like about MPS?

I love the people! They are very friendly and creative.

What did you teach at your old school?

	Music with 500 children.

If you didn't teach music what would you do?

I would like to be a travel journalist.

	Do you have any pets?

	No, I don't.

What year do you like teaching?

	I like teaching all years.

	I.

Next, we asked Mrs Stanford our new Assistant Principal and teacher of 3/4S some questions and these were her responses:

What do you like about MPS?

I like how beautiful the children are.

What subjects do you like teaching?

I particularly enjoy teaching literacy, numeracy and sport.

What schools did you used to teach at?

I just finished teaching at Errowanbang before it closed. I have also taught at Blayney, Mascot, Randwick, Orange, Canowindra and Bathurst Public.

If you didn't have a Year 3/4 class what class would you like to have?

I would like to have a Year 5/6.

	Do you have any pets?

I have a Red Cattle Pup.

	Do you have any children?

	I have three children.

What years did you teach at your old school?

I taught kindergarten through to Year 6.

We hope that you have learnt a little something about our wonderful new teachers at MPS. Next time you see them around the school make sure you say a big hello to welcome them. Also, watch out for the exciting assembly performances from Mrs Thompson's classes!

There are plenty of cake trays in the Office, so if you can do some baking that would be great! Don't forget to list the ingredients on the label provided. Cakes etc can be dropped on the day of the markets to the cake stall or alternatively on Friday afternoon to the school. Thanks for your support.

Prime Minister writes to Millthorpe kindergarten students!

Read the letters here: Kindergarten letters (docx 20 KB)

	Written by Pagan

Millthorpe Public School kindergarten students received an exciting surprise recently ......a letter from the Prime Minister! The enthusiastic students had sent the Prime Minister multiple letters about the problems that whaling is causing to the whale population. The letters were urging those involved in whaling to stop immediately.

The Prime Minister's letter was inspiring, with him stating:

"I encourage all of the students to embrace reading because it will open up the world to you".

This was just one of the many positive comments that Mr Abbott had to say to our kindergarten students.

Mrs Roffe, the KRH teacher, was filled with praise for her students. When asked about how the kindergarten students came to write to the Prime Minister she replied:

"We were learning about whales and the students wanted to send letters about the problems of whaling. When we received a reply from the Prime Minister's office we were all very excited. In the letter it was thanking the kindergarten students for their letters and stating that one of the kinders could be the next Prime Minister!"

Our Principal, Ms Jackett, was very excited about the Prime Minister's letter, exclaiming:

"I thought kindergarten were VERY clever and thoughtful when they wrote about whaling issues to the Prime Minister. They were really caring and confidently wrote to the Prime Minister about their concerns. I am really proud of them.

I was AMAZED that the Prime Minister wrote back! However, he didn't really tell the students what HE would do about the whaling issues concerning them - but he is proud that they are such great readers and writers. I think that it's a really hard issue for the Prime Minister to address because of political pressures involved".

Congratulations to the kindergarten students for their concern about an important issue and for taking action.

	Written by Lachlan and Pagan

On Friday 31st October the Millthorpe Public School Ukulele group performed at the Wontama Nursing Home as part of Grandparent's Day celebrations. The group was accompanied by the Principal Mrs Jackett and the Ukulele group teacher Mrs Gray, and performed the songs Riptide, I'm Yours and Quartermaster's Store. All the residents at the home were given an egg shaker to use so that they could accompany the ukuleles and groove along to the songs. They all seemed to really enjoy the show!

As members of the ukulele group we all felt very proud of ourselves for giving something back to the community. All the residents had plenty of interesting stories to share and we could tell that they got a lot of joy from our visit.

On the bus back to school Isaac and Brock worked out the chords for the Count Us In Music song Paint Me A Song and we all joined in. It was so much fun!

Mrs Gray, our ukulele teacher had this to say about the day:

"Last Friday, an enthusiastic band of 20 talented ukulele players travelled to Wontama Nursing Home in Orange to perform for some delightful residents. Ms Jackett and Mrs Gray accompanied these 20 wonderful students and were so proud of their amazing musical abilities, as well as their ability to socialise so beautifully with the elderly audience. The audience members joined in by playing percussion instruments and a great time was had by all!"

Mrs Jackett was also honoured to be a part of the day:

"I was very proud of the 'Ultimate Ukulele Tour'! The students interacted so beautifully with the older members of our community, and performed really well. It is really enriching for the students and the nursing home residents to spend some time together and have a conversation, sharing life stories.

We met Irene who is 100 years old and very keen to hear us perform again. Albert was a charmer, and Michelle (the organiser of the day) gave the children Halloween bags full of goodies. I am always proud of Millthorpe students and this time I was REALLY proud!"

	Written by Paige and Campbell.

On Thursday 18th September 2014 the finals of Millthorpe's Got Talent were held in the school hall. There were six finalists who all provided a very entertaining show. It was a highly competetive field of contestants, ranging in acts from singing, dancing, gymnastics, a piano solo, a puppet show and even some magic tricks. In between the performances the crowd was entertained by some marvellous ads produced by Millthorpe Public School teachers.

The judges (Millthorpe Public School teachers) provided plenty of laughs dressing up as Kylie Minogue, Red Foo and Keith Urban. The finalists included Holly, (in kindergarten) who sang and danced performing 'Naughty' from Matilda the Musical. Makeedi, Heidi, Georgina and Holly (in year 3) performed a perfect puppet show. Megan and Lily in year 2 presented a marvellous magic show and Gloria year 4 played the piano with style. Annabelle , Ruby (in year 5) and Paris (in year 6) presented a fantastic dance and gymnastics mega-show that had the audience mesmorised. Eleanor (in year 5) sang a beautiful rendition of 'Never Saw Blue' . It was this wonderful performance that won her first prize in the end.

Our Principal Mrs Jackett had this to say about the talent at Millthorpe Public School:

"I think Millthorpe students are AMAZING. The performers were very, very talented and the audience was really supportive and encouraging. Millthorpe students are incredible at their ability to help and support each other. I think the winner Eleanor Edwards has the potential to be an incredible singer - she already is!"

Miss Wilkin, the Millthorpe's Got Talent Producer had this to say:

"The talent that Millthorpe Public School students displayed this year was out of this world. It made the job of selecting the six finalists extremely difficult. Millthorpe's Got Talent is a wonderful opportunity for students to perform in front of a large audience to practise their stage manner. Well done to our winner Eleanor on her outstanding performance."

With talent this great, we can't wait for next year's show!

No Direct Deposits in Term 4 2013

Our School is one of 229 schools in NSW who are piloting the new school finance and student management systems which will roll into our school in Term 4.

As a result of this, we will not have a bank account which parents can deposit money into, therefore payments for anything starting in Term 4 can only be made by cheque or cash at the school office.

Balances of Term 4 excursions after this week must be made at the office, not direct deposit. It is really important that NO direct deposits are made after Friday 20th september 2013, as there will be no account for it to go into. We cannot stress how important this is , thanks for your understanding.

Millthorpe Markets

Twice each year the Millthorpe P&C host the Millthorpe Markets. It is an outstandingly popular day with the community, and stall-holders alike. Parents and community members join forces to man the BBQ's, the students contribute their time to help on the school stalls, supervised by teachers, and assisted by parent volunteers. It is a great day for your Christmas shopping, and the most important fund-raiser for the school. Take a scenic drive to Millthorpe on Sunday 4th Decemer, and join us!
